Mobile charging stations usher in the era of "on-demand service": V2G technology turns electric vehicles into urban "power banks"

August 18, 2025 · Willdigits

In the underground parking lot of Beijing Hopson One shopping mall, a purple-and-yellow robot resembling an owl slowly drives toward an electric vehicle waiting to be charged—a sign that the traditional charging model is undergoing a quiet revolution.

On a peaceful early morning, in the underground garage of Beijing Chaoyang Hopson One, a white electric vehicle is parked in a corner. Owner Mr. Li simply taps his phone, and within minutes a mobile charging robot named "Otto" arrives, automatically opens the charging port, and completes the battery replenishment while he works in the mall.

This "car looking for a charger" to "charger looking for a car" model is rapidly spreading nationwide. As of August 2025, with policy support and technological breakthroughs, mobile energy storage charging solutions are experiencing explosive growth.

In Beijing alone, about 1,000 charging robots will be deployed in major office buildings and shopping malls this year, covering 150 parking lots.

01 The Rise of Mobile Charging: Ending the Era of "Searching for EV Chargers"

For a long time, EV owners have been plagued by range anxiety and charging difficulties—fixed EV chargers are limited in number, inconveniently located, and often occupied by fuel-powered vehicles. Mobile energy storage technology is fundamentally changing this landscape.

Century New Energy's "solar/PV + storage + charging + testing + discharging integrated mobile energy storage charging and battery swapping platform" represents the industry's cutting edge. The system combines BIPV photovoltaic modules with a mobile charging platform, serving surrounding electric vehicles while powering buildings.

The green energy utilization rate has jumped from 30% to over 98%, solving the long-standing problem of low efficiency in traditional photovoltaic systems.

Meanwhile, Kedaton Energy's second-generation AI mobile charging robot debuted at the 2025 Beijing Charging Expo, featuring an upgraded 208kWh battery capacity and brand-new autonomous navigation plus V2G bidirectional charging technology. Users can summon 60kW DC fast charging service anytime through the app.

These innovations are rapidly taking root across the country. Saibao New Energy has deployed 60 mobile charging vehicles in the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, serving over 10,000 car owners and completing more than 60,000 charging sessions.

Residents of Xiaonanzhuang Community in Haidian District simply make a reservation through WeChat, and property staff dispatch a mobile charging vehicle to their doorstep, providing one-hour fast charging service at just 1 yuan per kWh.

02 The V2G Revolution: Electric Vehicles Become the City's "Mobile Power Banks"

Electric vehicles are evolving from transportation tools into mobile energy storage units in the urban power grid. On August 17, Hunan Province officially launched the "Mobile Power Bank" V2G pilot program, activating the vehicle-to-grid interaction platform.

The system allows electric vehicles to feed surplus electricity back to the power grid during peak demand. State Grid Hunan Electric Vehicle Company has installed two V2G DC EV chargers at the Langli charging station in Changsha County, compatible with vehicle models that support bidirectional charging and discharging.

Car owners can reserve discharge time slots through the mini-program, easily completing energy transactions.

At the renovation site of Fengpu Second Village in Shanghai, five private electric vehicles powered 36 households for 7 hours, delivering 260kWh of electricity, outperforming traditional diesel generators with silent, zero-emission operation.

Participating owner Mr. Bao said: "I discharged 60 kWh today, and the carbon credits I earned are enough to offset 100 kWh of charging fees—it saves money and protects the environment."

03 Policy Support Accelerates V2G Commercialization

The industry's growth is inseparable from strong policy support. As of August 2025, China has introduced 15 V2G-related policies, with local governments rolling out subsidy measures.

In April, Shanghai and eight other cities were selected for the first batch of V2G pilot zones (30 projects in total). Nanjing offers a subsidy of 150 yuan/kW for public V2G DC chargers and 50,000 yuan in construction subsidies for bidirectional battery swapping stations.

Shenzhen's Pingshan District offers construction subsidies of up to 200,000 yuan, while Hangzhou provides subsidies of up to 2 yuan/kWh for discharging that participates in peak shaving and valley filling.

Enterprises are also joining in. GAC Aion launched the recruitment of Guangzhou's first batch of V2G users in August, offering 4,000 yuan in incentives and free smart EV chargers. Giants such as BMW, Ford, BYD, NIO, and CATL are all actively deploying V2G solutions.

04 Business Model Innovation: Solving the "Last Mile" Problem

Mobile charging has given rise to novel business models. "It is not only a supplement to fixed infrastructure but also a key solution for emergency rescue," noted Huang Shan, founder of Yiwa Research Institute.

Saibao COO Lin Lin describes mobile charging units as "the capillaries and emergency response mechanism of the urban power grid"—public fast charging serves as the arteries, home charging provides a stable foundation, and mobile solutions precisely cover emergency energy replenishment needs.

Old residential communities benefit particularly significantly. The 1980s transformer in Xiaonanzhuang originally could not support large-scale EV charger installation, and the dilemma was only resolved after mobile charging vehicles were introduced last October.

Emergency demand is also growing steadily. More than 100,000 roadside assistance cases are related to charging each year. During holiday congestion or roadside breakdowns, mobile charging vehicles can respond within 60 minutes, far faster than waiting hours in line at service areas.

05 Future Vision: Autonomous Driving Technology Integrated into the Energy Internet

The development roadmap is very clear. Kedaton's robot supports OTA remote upgrades, continuously optimizing algorithms without downtime.

Next-generation batteries and smarter dispatch systems will significantly enhance service capabilities. "Our current fleet supports 20-30 concurrent charging tasks, and that number is expected to double in the future," Lin Lin revealed. AI optimization is expected to reduce deployment time by 30%.

Of course, cost remains a challenge. Huang Shan said that although labor and automation inputs are high, costs will decline further as economies of scale take effect.

Professor Wang Conghu of Renmin University of China believes: "The shift from 'cars looking for chargers' to 'chargers looking for cars' is a typical epitome of digital transformation"—let machines move more and people travel less.

Mobile charging is reshaping how energy is used. When electric vehicles become grid-level "power banks," and when garage robots autonomously recharge vehicles, traditional energy boundaries are becoming blurred.

The future is already here. In Beijing, 1,000 robots are ready for deployment; in Shanghai, electric vehicles are lighting up old communities; in Hunan, V2G is balancing grid loads.

As policies strengthen and technology matures, mobile charging will completely transform the energy lifestyle—imagine stepping out in the morning to find your EV has already fed overnight power back to the grid, with earnings added to your account and remaining range sufficient for the day's commute. This smart, efficient new energy experience is just around the corner.
